Chicago Teen Who Broadcasted The Horrifying Beating And Torture Of A Disabled Man On Facebook Live Avoids Jail In Case That Shocked The Nation
A 19-year-old who shocked America after a disturbing video of her torturing a disabled man went viral, has been sentenced.
However her lenient punishment may surprise you.
Brittany Covington was sentenced to four years probation on Friday in Chicago, after the teen pled guilty to a hate crime.
The incident, broadcast live on Facebook, involved a white victim and four black youths.
They taunted the young man and viciously beat him up.
Covington had been held in jail without bond since January.
Her three co-defendants are her sister Tanishia Covington, 24, Jordan Hill, 18, and Tesfaye Cooper, 18.
They remain in custody and their cases are pending.
The horrifying incident unfolded this past New Year’s Eve.
Hill picked up the victim, who has a chronic mental disorder, in a stolen van at a suburban Chicago McDonald’s, the Sun-Times reported.
The pair had been classmates at an alternative high school in the west suburbs of the city.
They drove around in the stolen van for three days visiting friends, police said.
During that time, the victim slept in the stolen van until they ended up at the Covington sisters’ apartment on the West Side of Chicago.
There a ‘play fight’ between Hill and the victim escalated into something more sinister.
The victim was bullied into a corner by the defendants, according to police.
Hill and Cooper allegedly cut his clothing with a knife, hit him and forced him to drink toilet water.
On the video of the attack, the suspects are seen beating the victim and can be heard teasing and cursing at him.
‘F**k Trump!’ and ‘F**k white people!’ can be heard in the background of the video.
At one point, someone demanded that the victim kiss the floor, and told him to ‘say “I love black people”.’
Prosecutors say that Hill called the victim’s mother and asked for $300 in ransom for his return.
The victim eventually escaped and a police officer spotted him wandering down a street, bloodied and disoriented.
As part of Covington’s plea deal, prosecutors dropped a kidnapping charge.
She also must perform 200 hours of community service. The judge also ordered her to not use social media for four years.
The other three defendants are still said to be negotiating their sentences.
